Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park is a 3,000-acre public recreation and nature preservation area located twelve miles east of Whitehall in Jefferson County, Montana. The state park includes two visitor centers, ten miles of hiking trails, a campground, and its namesake limestone caverns. The Lewis and Clark Caverns Historic District was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2018.

Candlelight tours follow the entire developed cave route with a 3/4 mile unshoveled walk uphill uphill 300 feet in elevation to reach the cave. Visitors must complete this within 1/2 hr to be eligible.

Lewis & Clark Caverns State Park
The Lewis and Clark Caverns of Montana are found in the Madison Limestone beds of Mississippian age. This limestone was formed by organisms, having shells made of calcium, who died in a sea that was found in this area about 350 million years ago. About 70 million years ago there was a tremendous uplift that greatly tilted the once level rock.

The caverns are not just one big cave, like some of the other popular caves in the country, but a series of unique rooms connected by narrow tunnels. There are different fees for visiting Lewis & Clark Caverns. Entrance to the state park itself is just $8 per vehicle. This is good for hiking and picnicking, as well as exploring the Visitors Centers. Cave tour tickets are a separate cost: $15 for anyone 15 years and older. $10 for children between the ages of 5- 14.
